Aiken County in 1830’s was known as an exclusive health resort and “Winter Colony” for Northern aristocracy. It has been named a top ten place to retire and an All American City. It is world renowned for raising and training thoroughbred horses, and having a premier practice facility for Olympic rowing teams across the globe. Aiken County is located between the capitol city Columbia (56 miles) and Augusta, GA (16 miles). Population – 2000 Census: 142,552 Aiken County is one of the largest counties (by area) in the state. Aiken County will complete the following project thanks to the 1-cents capitol project sales tax referendum approved in 1998. The monies will be used to design, engineer, construct or improve highways, roads, sidewalks, streets and/or bridges; design, engineer, construct or improve drainage systems; purchases of equipment and vehicles to support the performance of government services; and the purchase of property to support government services and functions in Aiken Count. |
