George K. Fickling was initially appointed to office in June 1992 by Governor Carroll Campbell to fulfill an unexpired term. He then won the general election in November 1992, and was subsequently re-elected in 1996, 2000, and again in 2004. He is a member of the South Carolina Association of Clerks of Court and Registers of Deeds, member and co-founder of the South Carolina Association of Countywide Elected Executives (SCACEE), member of the Masons, Jamil Shrine Temple, Vietnam Veterans of America and several other clubs and organizations. He attends and is a member of Blackville First Baptist Church.

A native of Barnwell County, he had a successful sales and marketing career with a major national company, during which time he lived and widely traveled in various states throughout the United States. During that time, he achieved a high level management position including oversight of three factory branch operations and a regional sales force.

Mr. Fickling graduated from Blackville High School, attended the University of South Carolina and has completed more than one hundred courses of study, seminars and workshops relating to administrative, marketing and management functions. Numerous other continuing education workshops and seminars relating to the unique and special functions of the office of Clerk of Court have been completed over the past thirteen years.

Mr. Fickling was drafted into the United States Army in 1966. While in the army, beyond the normal basic training, he graduated from advanced radio/teletype school, the Chemical, Biological & Radiological school, and the Fourth Army NCO Leadership Academy. He served as Brigade Training NCO in the Second Armored Division, attained the rank of sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1968.

He is married to Debra Daniels Fickling. They have four married daughters and six grandchildren. George and Debbie spend their leisure time boating and fishing the coastal waters around Beaufort, S. C.
