Calhoun County is located in the heart of South Carolina. Central to the county is its seat of government, the town of Saint Matthews, which lies 35 miles south of Columbia. Calhoun County was formed in 1908 from parts of Orangeburg and Lexington counties.

Population – 2000 census: 15,185 -- a 19% increase in the last 10 years.

The Congaree River and Lake Marion borders the county providing over 40 miles of waterfront for recreational activity.

The Calhoun County museum is located on Butler Street in the town of Saint Matthews. The museum offers an interesting look into the history of the county. The gift shop is an added attraction.
