Judge Alex. S. Macaulay was born on Sullivans Island, South Carolina, in 1942. He is the son of the late Dr. Neill Webster and Eliza Singleton (Barron) Macaulay and is married to the former Maria Locke Boineau. They have two children, Mrs. Maria M. Sellers and Dr. Alexander Stephens, Jr., and six grandchildren-- Maria Locke and Sarah Calhoun Sellers, and Eliza Maxwell, Lee Edward, Kate Eleanor, and Julia Webster Macaulay.
Judge Macaulay was reared in Richland County, attended the public schools, and graduated from The Citadel, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. He served in the United States Army, to include a tour in Vietnam where he was awarded the Combat Medic's Badge, Bronze Star and Air Medal. After his military service, he attended the University of South Carolina School of Law on the "G.I.Bill," graduating in 1970 with a Juris Doctor degree.
In law school, Alex. Macaulay was a law clerk in the Office of the South Carolina Attorney General. Upon admission to the bar, he was an Assistant Attorney General from 1970 through 1972, representing the state and its agencies, to include the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission, Department of Social Services and Department of Highways and Public Transportation, in trials and appeals as well as in criminal prosecutions.
On January 1, 1973, Alex. Macaulay joined the private practice of the Honorable J. Pat Miley, late of Walhalla, under the firm name of Miley and Macaulay. He has served as president of the Oconee County Bar (1980), and a Member of the State Board of Education representing the Tenth Circuit (1979-1980). In 1980, he was elected to the South Carolina Senate to represent District One, Oconee, Pickens, Anderson and Abbeville Counties, serving until his election as Judge of the Tenth Judicial Circuit in 1994. In the State Senate, Alex. Macaulay served as Chairman of the Medical Affairs Committee and was a member of the Finance, Judiciary, Education, Banking and Insurance, and Labor, Commerce and Industry Committees.
Judge Macaulay was actively engaged in the practice of law for twenty-four years, representing individuals and the public, plaintiffs and defendants, in civil and criminal trials and on appeals, with cases tried, or ultimate disposition being made on appeal, in all levels of court of this State and the United States. In addition to the South Carolina Bar, Judge Macaulay is admitted to and has practiced in the United States District Court, Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.
Alex Macaulay is a member of the Walhalla Presbyterian Church where he is a Sunday School teacher and has served as a Deacon and Elder.
