Judge John M. Rucker was born in Newberry, South Carolina in 1944. He is the son of Marvin J. Rucker and the late Sarah Bouknight Rucker.
He attended public school in Newberry and received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina in 1966. While at the university he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He received his juris doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1969.
After graduation from Law School he entered private practice first in Laurens County then in his home county of Newberry. In 1971 he was named Recorder for the City of Newberry a position he held until he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1976 where he served until 1980. In 1984 then Governor Richard Riley appointed him as a Commissioner with the South Carolina Tax Commission where he served until June 1988 when he began service as a Family Court Judge in the Eighth Judicial Circuit.
Judge Rucker has been a member of the South Carolina Bar Association, Newberry County Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He is admitted to practice in all South Carolina Courts, the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina and the United States Supreme Court.
He is a member of the Rotary Club of Newberry as well as other civic organizations. He is a member of Central United Methodist where he has served on various Church Boards. He is married to the former Harriett Lee and they have two children, Brandt and Wylie.
