Judge Kelly Pope-Black was born in Greer, South Carolina and is the daughter of Marion and Kaye Pope. She has two siblings, Michelle and Arnie.
She is married to Jody Black. They have two daughters, 5 dogs, 1 cat and 1 horse.
Judge Pope-Black graduated from Presbyterian College in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in both Political Science and Sociology. She was a member of the Presbyterian College volleyball team. Following college graduation, Judge Pope-Black worked with non-profit organizations as an advocate for abused and neglected children. She received her Juris Doctor from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 2001. While in law school, she was a member of the Dean’s List and several national trial teams. She received the Order of Barrister and was the first female in the school’s history to be named Advocate of the Year.
Following graduation from law school, she returned home and practiced as an associate with Cobourn & Saleeby, LLP as a civil litigator. She continued her work in the area of civil litigation with the law firms of Babb & Brown, P.C. and later with Christian & Davis. In 2007, Judge Pope-Black became a partner in the law firm of Mooneyham Berry & Pope, LLC. During her time as a trial attorney, she practiced in the areas of family law, criminal law, complex civil litigation, construction law and personal injury.
Judge Pope-Black is a member of Inman First Baptist Church and enjoys spending time with family, horseback riding, reading and volunteering.
