Judge J. Munford Scott, Jr.

Judge J. Munford Scott, Jr. graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1967, and the University of South Carolina Law School in 1970. While in law school he served on the South Carolina Law School Law Review. After graduation from law school he worked with the United States Department of Justice, Tax Division in Washington D.C… Judge Scott received a Masters in Tax Law from the George Washington National Law Center in 1972.

After returning to South Carolina to practice law, Judge Scott served in the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1978 and 79.

Judge Scott practiced tax, probate and estate law in Florence and surrounding counties for over 40 years. He has been certified as an Estate and Probate Law Specialist by the South Carolina Supreme Court and has been included in the publications “Best Lawyer in America” and “Top Attorneys in South Carolina”.

Judge Scott has spoken on estate and probate topics on numerous occasions and has published a number of articles on various aspects of estate and probate law as well as writing a section in the South Carolina Bar’s three volume reference set “Estate Planning in South Carolina”. In 2013 he was appointed Probate Judge for Florence County to fill the unexpired term of retiring Judge Kenneth Eaton.

Judge Scott is married to the former Lyllian Gray of Whiteville North Carolina and has three children, John M. Scott, III, a practicing attorney with Turner Padget Graham and Laney, Elizabeth (Beth) Player of Elliott SC and Lyllian Gray Scott of Florence SC.

Judge Scott is a Member of First Presbyterian Church in Florence as was his father and grandfather. He teaches Sunday school there and has coach youth basketball and played with the praise and worship team.
