Maurice Anthony Odom was convicted of second-degree burglary. The court of appeals affirmed his conviction. State v. Odom, Op. No. 2018-UP-273 (S.C. Ct. App. filed June 27, 2018). The Court granted Odom a writ of certiorari. Odom argues the court of appeals erred in affirming the trial court's refusal to dismiss the second-degree burglary charge against him on the ground that his right to a speedy trial had been violated.

We granted a petition for a writ of certiorari to review Paradis v. Charleston County School District, 424 S.C. 603, 819 S.E.2d 147 (Ct. App. 2018), in which the court of appeals affirmed the circuit court's dismissal of Petitioner's civil conspiracy claim on the basis she failed to plead any special damages with specificity. Petitioner asserts this pleading requirement is a rule that originated in Todd v. South Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Co., 276 S.C. 284, 278 S.E.2d 607 (1981), and she challenges the continued application of this rule as a pleading requirement for claims of civil conspiracy.
