The South Carolina Court of Appeals held a special session on Thursday, June 6, at the Francis Marion Performing Arts Center. Chief Judge James E. Lockemy presided over the oral arguments, along with Judge Paul E. Short, Jr., and Judge Stephanie P. McDonald.

In attendance were more than 125 local citizens and students, including a group of paralegal students from Florence-Darlington Technical College. The Court heard oral arguments from attorneys who practice in Florence, Hartsville, Lake City, Columbia, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston. 

Following oral arguments, the Court entertained questions from the audience regarding the Judicial Branch of government and its role in a representative democracy. Representing the Legislative branch of government on the discussion panel were Senator Thomas McElveen of Sumter and Representative Jay Jordan of Florence. University of South Carolina School of Law Dean Robert Wilcox moderated the discussion.

“By their presence, questions, and reactions, it was obvious people enjoyed seeing an important part of our justice system taking place in the local community,” said Chief Judge Lockemy. “As a judge, it was refreshing to be among the people as we conducted proceedings usually held in the in the state capitol.”
