Chief Justice Jean Hoefer Toal Addresses S.C. Judiciary
at 2008 Annual Judicial Conference

On Thursday, August 21, 2008, Chief Justice Jean Hoefer Toal addressed members of South Carolina's Judiciary at the Annual Judicial Conference.

Justice Toal recognized the contributions of retired Supreme Court Justice James Moore and retiring Court of Appeals Judge Ralph King Anderson as well as Family Court Judges Barry Knobel and Timothy Brown. She also recognized Master-In-Equity Judges Robert Jennings and Charles Curry.

 

A special welcome was extended to the newest members of South Carolina's Judiciary: Supreme Court Justice John Kittredge; Court of Appeals Judges Aphrodite Konduros, John Geathers and James Lockemy; Circuit Court Judges Kristi Lea Harrington and Larry Hyman, Jr.; Family Court Judges Dana Morris, Timothy Pogue, Ronald Norton, Thomas Sprott, Jr., Peter Fuge and Letitia Hamilton Verdin; and Master-In-Equity Judges Richard Booth, Joseph Crosby and Stephen Doby.

Justice Toal provided an update on state court funding, caseload statistics, the Statewide Court Case Management System, the Statewide Solicitor Case Management System, the Family Court Case Management System and other technology initiatives underway in SC.

Her remarks also included information about the Access to Justice Commission (designed to expand access to civil legal representation for people of low income and modest means), Public Access to Court Records, the Business Court Pilot Program and Specialized Docket Management.

Chief Justice Toal recognized Judge Leslie Riddle who received the 2008 National Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Judge of the Year award for 2008.

Justice Toal also paid special tribute to Judge James W. Johnson, Jr. who passed away in July 2008.
