Chief Justice Toal Speaks To  Alabama Educators and Attorneys about Promoting Civics Education in Schools

On Tuesday, September 7, 2010, Chief Justice Jean Toal spoke to a group of Alabama educators and attorneys about iCivics, an online project to teach students about the three branches of government.

iCivics is a national program that was spearheaded by Justice Sandra Day OConnor to help educate students about civics and government, an area of education that is lagging in our nations schools. iCivics uses video games as the primary tool to teach students about government and help them understand that it is important and relevant to their lives.

Chief Justice Toal was introduced to iCivics during a visit by Justice OConnor to South Carolina nearly one year ago. Chief Justice Toal was so impressed by the program and by students enthusiastic response to the iCivics resources that she jumped at the opportunity to help bring visibility to iCivics in the state. Chief Justice Toal is working with educators and attorneys from across the state. The goal is to have iCivics resources used in every school in South Carolina.
