South Carolina Commission on Women Honors Justice Kaye Hearn
With 2012 Woman of Achievement Award

COLUMBIA, S.C., September 24, 2012 - - The South Carolina Commission on Women has selected South Carolina Supreme Court Justice Kaye Hearn of Conway as the 2012 recipient of the Woman of Achievement Award. This award recognizes and honors a woman whose work and life has made a significant impact on the quality of life for other women and all citizens of South Carolina.

Governor Haley will recognize Justice Hearn on October 16, 2012, at 4:00 p.m. in front of the Governor’s office at the Statehouse.

Justice Hearn was chosen for her unconditional dedication, persistence and passion for justice in South Carolina. Justice Hearn was elected to the South Carolina Supreme Court in May of 2009, becoming its second woman member in history.  Prior to her election to this state’s highest court, Justice Hearn was a member of the South Carolina Court of Appeals for fifteen years, serving as its Chief Judge for ten years.   During her tenure as Chief Judge, Justice Hearn served as President of the Council of Chief Judges, a nationwide network of chief judges of the intermediate courts of appeal.  From 1986 until her election to the Court of Appeals in 1995, she served as a Family Court Judge.

“There were numerous women deserving of this award, but Justice Hearn stood out through her tireless efforts for fair application of the law here in South Carolina.  Moreover, by becoming only the second woman in South Carolina history to sit on the Supreme Court, she inspires citizens across this State to strive to achieve their own goals.” says South Carolina Commission on Women Chair Michelle Parsons Kelley. “The South Carolina Woman of Achievement Award gives us an opportunity to honor remarkable women, such as Justice Hearn, whose efforts inspire us all.”

The ceremony honoring Justice Hearn is open to the public.
