The Honorable Jean Hoefer Toal, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of South Carolina, joined women lawyers and judges in the Midlands area on the steps of the Supreme Court at 11:30 a.m. A group photo was taken to commemorate the event.

At the same time, women lawyers and judges in the Low Country met on the steps of the Federal Courthouse on Broad Street in downtown Charleston. Women lawyers and judges in the Grand Strand area met on the steps of the Horry County Courthouse and women lawyers and judges in the Upstate met on the steps of the Spartanburg County Courthouse, all for the purpose of taking group photographs.

The purpose of the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association includes the enhancement of the status, influence and effectiveness of women lawyers in the State of South Carolina; taking of positive steps to ensure that women lawyers achieve their fair share of opportunities and benefits available to those in the legal profession through advocacy, action and association; promotion and maintenance of the highest standards for the legal profession, the judiciary and the court systems of the State of South Carolina; promotion of the welfare and interests of women lawyers in a fair and impartial manner; provision of opportunities for the development of collegiality and mentoring among women lawyers; preservation of the rights of women and the elimination of gender biased conduct in the law and legal profession affecting women lawyers, litigants and persons employed in the legal profession; promotion of opportunities for women in the judiciary; work with other organizations for the purpose of resolving problems created by gender based discrimination within the legal systems of the State of South Carolina and society at large; encouragement and promotion of the participation of women in all facets of the legal profession; provision of a forum to consider and address issues unique to women in the legal profession; and honoring of those persons who demonstrate dedication to these goals and objectives.
