Judge Paul E. Short, Jr.

Judge Paul E. Short, Jr. was born in Gastonia, North Carolina, in 1947. He is the son of the late Paul E. Short, Sr. and Betty Pearson Short. He is married to the former Linda Ruth Huffstetler of Gastonia, and is the father of two daughters, Lindy Blanks and Melanie Edwards, and the grandfather of Ariel Blanks and Noah and Blythe Edwards.

Judge Short attended public schools in Gastonia, North Carolina. He received his bachelor's degree in 1968 from The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, and in 1971 received his juris doctorate degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in Columbia, South Carolina. He is currently enrolled in the Master of Judicial Studies Program at the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada.

He entered active duty in the U. S. Army in August, 1971, and was discharged from active duty in November, 1971. He served in the South Carolina National Guard until 1973, and was discharged from the U. S. Army Reserve in 1974.

Judge Short practiced law continuously in Chester County, South Carolina, for 20 years and was elected to serve in the South Carolina House of Representatives, representing House District 43 from 1982-1991. He was elected to serve on the South Carolina Circuit Court Bench in the At-Large Seat #8 in 1991, where he served until elected as Resident Judge of the Sixth Judicial Circuit in 1999. In August, 1999, Judge Short was elected President of the South Carolina Association of Circuit Court Judges, and was re-elected to serve a second term as President in August, 2000.  Judge Short was elected to the Court of Appeals on May 25, 2004.

He is currently a member of the Chester County Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar Association, the South Carolina Association of Circuit Judges, the American Bar Association.

Judge Short is a past member of the Chester Rotary Club, a life member of the Sertoma Club, a member of the Chester Shrine Club, Chester Masonic Lodge, and the American Legion. He is a member of Purity Presbyterian Church.
