Judge D. Craig Brown was born in Sumter, South Carolina in 1969. He is the son of David H. and Mary M. Brown. He is married to Kay Hunt Brown from Bishopville, South Carolina and they have three children, a daughter and two sons.

He grew up in Williamsburg County where he attended Hemingway Primary School, Hemingway Middle School, and Williamsburg Academy, where he graduated from in 1987. He then entered The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, in 1988 and graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science. After graduating from The Citadel, he went to work with the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services in Richland County. He entered the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1994 and graduated in 1997. Upon graduation, he went to work as a Law Clerk for The Honorable M. Duane Shuler.

In 1998, he moved to Florence, South Carolina, after taking a job with the former law firm of Bridges, Orr, Derrick & Ervin. While working at Bridges, Orr Derrick & Ervin, his primary area of practice was insurance defense. He worked with this firm until May, 2001, when he entered into private practice. While in private practice, he engaged in plaintiff's litigation, insurance defense, and criminal defense (State and Federal). During the course of his legal career, he has been admitted to practice law in the South Carolina State Court's, Federal District Court for South Carolina, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. On February 3, 2010, he was elected by the General Assembly to the position of Circuit Judge, At-Large, Seat Number 8.

In addition to practicing law, he has served as an adjunct professor at Florence-Darlington Technical College and Francis Marion University where he taught Business Law. He has also served as a Commissioner on the Florence County Voter Registration and Elections Commission and he is a past president of the Pee Dee Area Citadel Club. He has also assisted in coaching Upward Soccer and has served as an Assistant Coach in baseball with the Florence County Department of Parks and Recreation.

He is a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
