Judge Benjamin “Alex” Hyman was born in Conway, SC in 1980 and is the son of the Honorable Larry B. Hyman Jr., retired Circuit Judge, and Meredith Hyman, retired public school teacher. He is married to Tammi Barfield Hyman and they have two children.

Judge Hyman attended public schools in Conway and graduated from Conway High School. After high school Judge Hyman completed his undergraduate education in his home state of South Carolina, graduating from the University of South Carolina in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. While at the University of South Carolina, he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity serving as the Secretary, Philanthropy Chair, and President. Additionally, while in undergrad, he worked for Governor Jim Hodges as a staff intern.

After completing his undergraduate education, Judge Hyman enrolled at the William H. Bowen School of Law at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. While in Little Rock, he worked in family mediation and also worked for the Pulaski County Public Defender.

After completing law school, he clerked for the Honorable Edward B. Cottingham, Circuit Court Judge for the Fourth Judicial Circuit. After completing his clerkship, he began working for his father at the Law Office of Larry B. Hyman Jr. In 2008, he took over his father’s law practice in Conway, renaming it The Hyman Law Group. For 15 years Judge Hyman handled a variety of cases all across the state of South Carolina in State and Federal Court.

Judge Hyman is a member of the SC bar and admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. Judge Hyman is a Certified Court Mediator and a Certified Court Arbitrator. He has previously lectured at Horry Georgetown Technical College, where he taught Criminal Law and has lectured multiple times at Coastal Carolina University. Judge Hyman is actively involved at Trinity United Methodist Church, and he serves on the Board of Trustees and is a member of the praise band. He is a member of the Waccamaw Sertoma club where he has served as a board member and as its President.  Judge Hyman also previously served as a member of the City of Conway Zoning Board of Appeals, Planning Commission and was member of the Conway City Council until his election to the Circuit bench.  He enjoys hunting, fishing, playing music, and spending time with his family and four dogs Judge, Belle, Scotch, and Dutton.

Judge Hyman was elected by the General Assembly in February 2023 as a Resident Judge for the 15th Judicial Circuit.
