Judge Edgar H. Long, Jr.

Edgar Henderson Long, Jr. was born in 1954 to Ed and Martha Long of Due West, South Carolina. Mr. Long operated a service station until his death in 1959, and Mrs. Long taught mathematics at Erskine College.

He was educated in the public schools of Due West. After graduation from high school, Judge Long attended Erskine College. While at Erskine, he met his wife, Amy Tripp, from Fountain Inn, South Carolina. They were married in 1975, and completed their college education the following year, in 1976.

After college, Judge Long earned a Masters in Public Administration in 1977, and was accepted to USC Law School in 1978. He received his degree from Law School in 1981, and was admitted to the South Carolina Bar that same year.

Judge Long began his legal career with Legal Services Agency of Western Carolina, in 1982, where he was employed for two years. He then began work for the Tenth Circuit Solicitor's Office, where he was an assistant solicitor assigned primarily to Family Court, handling all juvenile and D.S.S. cases.

In 1986, he accepted a position with the Anderson Law firm of Chapman, King and Byrholdt. He worked with that firm until 1993, when he opened the law firm of Long & Smith, along with his partner, G. W. King Smith.

The law firm of Long & Smith expanded in 2003 to include Mike Burrell, and they continued to practice together until 2006. From that time until his election to the bench, Judge Long worked as a solo practitioner. In February of 2009, he was elected by the General Assembly of South Carolina to fill the unexpired term of the Honorable Barry W. Knobel.

Judge Long has held positions of leadership in several community organizations. He served as president of the Anderson Roadrunners Running Club and was race director for the Midnight Flight Road Race for four years. He also served as president of the Greater Anderson Musical Arts Consortium, and was a member of the Board of Directors for nine years.

Judge and Mrs. Long have two children, Tripp, who is the manager of the Enterprise Car Rental office in North Charleston, and Amanda, who teaches special education at Glenview Middle School in Anderson. Judge and Mrs. Long enjoy cooking, travel and working in their garden.
