James G. “Jim” McGee, III was born in 1959 in Hartsville, S.C., the son of James G. McGee, Jr. and Claire (Redman) McGee. Upon graduation from the University of South Carolina in 1982, Jim entered a career in broadcast journalism, working for ten years at WBTW-TV in Florence, the majority of the time serving as the evening news anchor. Jim left WBTW in 1992 to attend the University of South Carolina School of Law, graduating in 1995. He began practicing law in Florence that year with the firm of Dusenbury & Snow, where he remained until his election to the South Carolina Family Court. Jim’s law practice primarily focused on family litigation as well as attorney for volunteers of the Guardian ad litem program in the Twelfth Judicial Circuit. He also served as General Counsel for Francis Marion University and taught political science at the university.
Jim was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1997, serving for periods on the Judiciary and Ways and Means Committees as subcommittee chairman. He is a recipient of the Order of the Palmetto. He retired from service in the House in 2006.
Jim was elected in January of 2013 to the South Carolina Family Court Seat 3, At Large.
Jim is married to the former Kathy Shirley, a preschool teacher, and they have one child, who is presently a student at MUSC.
